Map Scale

A map is a represantation on a surface, of objects minimized in specific proportion, like roads and geographical shapes on the Earth. The proportion in usage of minimization actual lengths is the scale of map. The objects on map and their lengths on Earth could be easily calculated by the scale of map.

In current use, there are two sorts of scale :

Fractions Scale

If the rate between actual length and the length on map represented with fractional numbers; it is called fractions scale. 1:1000 or 1/10000. Fractions scale shows, in how many pieces a piece minimized. The numerator in fractions scale is stable as 1. Denominator is variable. The minimization rate and the denominator of fraction are equal. The numerator signifies the length on map and the denominator signifies the length on terrain.

Linear Scale

Scales generated with marking on a line, for the purpose of detect actual measures of lengths on map, are called linear scale. On linear scales, the part on the left side of "0" is in use to measure minor lengths. For some reasons ( film, photocopy etc. ) enlarging or minimizing maps changes the scale but the scales on the map remain unchanged and it gives misinformation. However, the size of linear scale changes due to minizing or enlarging size of map, it gives always exact information.
